Residential Care and House Parents

Today, boys and girls age 5 to 18 years live in nine residential cottages, each of which is staffed by trained house parents, many of whom have children of their own. The expansive campus offers ample space for playing fields and recreational activities, as well as a working farm.

There can be no question that children grow up best when raised as members of loving families. With understanding and nurturing parents to provide guidance and stability to their lives, most children flourish. Almost all the important lessons of life the children learn take place with the family structure with the house parents as mentors. The house parents are the heart of the campus as well as the Harbor's strongest force in the life of children.

When, through no fault of their own, children become victims of abuse and neglect at home, Boys & Girls Harbor is there to help. Boys & Girls Harbor does not replace a child's parents. It does, however, provide a warm, caring, and structured environment that will help kids grow into productive, self-confident adults.

Harbor kids do all the things that other kids do. They attend public school in La Porte, where they participate in a variety of extracurricular activities. Like most kids, they complain about having too much homework, but every year a substantial number of the Harbor kids make the A-B Honor Roll.
